  ***

  Ships appear in our skies. Anomalous objects -- discs, cylinders, luminous orbs, flying wings, ovoids, unmarked black helicopters, phantom airplanes, etc. There are landings, meetings between unknown entities and humans, messages are received, books are written.

  It has been noted that there is no dearth of information on UFOs. In fact, there is almost too much data, if we consider all raw incoming reports and communications. Yet, almost nothing substantial is known about the phenomenon, and hard, irrefutable evidence is nearly non-existent.

  Saucers fall to earth, and are recovered. There are occupants, alive or dead. Along with falls of rock or slag, metallic fragments of exploded craft, genuine and damning photographs and films, revealing tape recordings, and witnesses who know more than is good for them, all such evidence is either seized or mysteriously disappears, never to be seen again.

  Men and women who report unusual events are ridiculed, harassed, suppressed, ignored. What little gains are made in the way of gathering evidence or establishing "proofs" are quickly forgotten. The public has a short memory, the news media an even shorter one. You begin to suspect there is a sort of instantaneous amnesia in effect.

  A select few men establish contact with alien intelligences; they often learn a great deal before they are finally deluded or destroyed by those very same intelligences. If they are bold (or foolhardy) enough to reveal what they have been told, they are routinely dismissed by practically everyone -- the authorities, the public, even most of the ufologists and saucer buffs who are so busy gathering reports on run-of-the mill sightings.

  Once in a while some unfortunate person stumbles across a generous helping of the truth. They are visited, silenced. Some commit suicide, or suddenly die under suspicious circumstances. Others simply vanish. Men speak less than they know, hesitate to publicly declare all that they have discovered. Paranoia and outright fear control men's minds and actions.

  After nearly 40 years of public awareness and study, very little is known about unidentified flying objects. Of the five standard journalistic questions, we only know some of the "where" and "when" of a small fraction of sightings and encounter cases; "who" the aliens are, "what" the phenomenon actually represents, and "why" they are here, are still baffling mysteries.

  Barring some unforeseen major denouement, mass landings or a tell-all government confession, this situation probably won't change. At best, perhaps all we can do is continue to study, to wonder, to guess. And be prepared for the worst.

  The following scenarios are impromptu notes jotted at odd moments, and are not intended to be taken as full-blown, completely developed theories on alien origins and purposes. I make no claims that any of the ideas entertained herein represent the "truth" -- whatever that may mean -- or that I necessarily "believe" these ideas. Or that they are even "possible."

  These notes are offered solely in the spirit of communicating with like minds. Perhaps the most that can be expected is that these thoughts may further stir up already muddied waters.

  ***

  SCENARIOS OF ALIEN VISITATION;

  NOTES ON THE POSSIBLE SOURCE, PURPOSE AND NATURE OF UFO

  Note: most of the following assumes that the aliens are actual physical, living creatures or metaphysical beings from somewhere else -- in other words: Space Travelers, Time Travelers, or Dimensional Travelers. In many cases, "Space," "Time," or "Dimensional" may be interchangeable, or there could be a combination of other "places," such as actual living creatures from another time and a distant galaxy, or supernatural beings indigenous to our Earth space/solar system/galaxy, but from a different time-track, alternate reality, higher or lower dimension, etc. For the sake of variety, I've thrown in a couple Earth-based explanations, although much more could be said along those lines.

  SCIENTISTS

  They are from the distant future or past, are here only to study us dispassionately, as a terminal culture, precursors of a nuclear Armageddon. They are (by our/their standards) rational, sane, moral, beneficent, or at least indifferent. They practice non-interference for 1) moral reasons, 2) reasons having to do with time sequence logic, cause and effect, etc., or 3) legal reasons (strictly enforced Cosmic Law/Galactic Code sort of thing.) They aren't here to save us from ourselves, only to learn from our mistakes.

  MISSIONARIES

  They are from another time/space/dimension, and are here to prevent our self-destruction. They have identified us as an "endangered species" (if they're from a distant place or another dimension), or they are trying to prevent something which they know will happen (if they're from the distant past) or undo something which, from their perspective, has already happened (if they're from the far future.) They are able to interfere with our progress, as it is the moral thing to do, presents no insurmountable time logic/cause and effect difficulties, and is legal. They are, by our and their standards, moral, rational, sane, and beneficent. They are "Space Brothers" or "Angels" per Adamski, Angelucci and the other classic contactees.

  BREEDERS

  A subclass under "Missionaries" would be "Breeders" who are here from the future not to prevent our self-destruction, but to gather genetic material (plant/animal/human) so that extinct life forms can be "resurrected" in the future through cloning, cross-breeding with aliens, regeneration or whatever, as a way of "saving lost mankind" and other fauna and flora of the earth which will be destroyed in an atomic holocaust. This might fit neatly into abduction cases where humans are subjected to medical examinations, specimen taking events, cattle mutilations, and space rape cases. The Hill case and Villas-Boas case may make sense in this light.

  "Missionaries" who are here to prevent a holocaust, may attempt to do so by means of 1) a spiritual change in Man, 2) technological intervention (disarm the military or render weapons useless), or 3) political subterfuge or a takeover of power.

  TOURISTS

  Morally ambiguous aliens, ranging from benign through amoral/indifferent to malevolent. Basically here for our entertainment value, as oddities, antiquities, for our historical interest, or as good programming. We might be the equivalent of watching TV for them, or a trip to the earth might be like a vacation junket to the Grand Canyon. Perhaps they know we will/did suicide as a race and we have the same interest to them as the remains of Pompeii have to modern man. They are here to sight-see. If they are basically sane/moral/rational, they may have a code of non-interference (a la Star Trek) or at least minimal intervention. They may not care what we do, but merely be satisfied with watching us do it. If they are insane/immoral/irrational, they may have no code at all, or may be inconsistent in their guiding principles.

  If sane/moral, we'd be like a trip to the zoo: look but don't touch. However, if they're essentially mad or have no sense of ethics, we could be "open game." Perhaps 1) they are here illegally, as poachers, in violation of the standards established by their own culture, or 2) we're fair game, and Earth is an "anything goes" free-for-all. The earth as a carnival arcade, an amusement zone. Some are more, some less, moral and kind. Some may be outright depraved and sadistic. They may make sport of toying with us, as a cat with a mouse, by messing with our minds, manipulating our civilization, inflicting harm on i
ndividuals or groups -- physical torture, mental torture -- conducting unethical and inhumane experiments on us (per Nazi Germany), taking delight/sadistic pleasure in our pain, fright and confusion. They might be agents of a higher evil force ("devil"/"demon" theory). This all falls into the realm of Shaver's Dero as well as Fort's "we are property." Like drunken sailors on shore leave at a tropical port, deflowering the native maidens.

  POLICE

  From a highly moral and responsible advanced civilization, here only to protect us from other, less moral, marauding aliens, and to police negative or criminal elements of their own culture. To Keep themselves in check. Game wardens. A grossly optimistic theory.

  MIMICS

  Frauds who appear to be scientists, missionaries, or harmless tourists, but actually are something else. Their true purpose, nature and origin are not revealed. This would include pillaging tourists, pirates, opportunists, sadists, and fraudulent occult forces. Concealed activity masked by trickery could be military, commercial, industrial, biological, and spiritual enterprises.

  SCANNERS

  A variation of the "Scientists" or "Tourists" scenarios. Existing independently of our time continuum, they are scanning through Earth's long term history, much like viewing a videotape on fast forward, with slow-mo or stop-frame capability, to get an overview of our entire progress. Every now and then they slow down their movement through time, or stop altogether for brief periods, to get a good look at something that has caught their attention or aroused their curiosity. Heavy emphasis on the second half of the Twentieth Century is due to our achieving atomic energy and space travel ability. They have no long term interest or involvement in our present period, except as it fits into the overall picture. Maybe they're actively searching for something (a particular object or event) or for answers to some aspect of our behavior which is as much of a mystery to them, as they are to us.

  THESPIANS

  UFO sighting, contact, message and abduction events are a form of theater, an alien art form. Maybe related to the "Tourists" (they're putting on a show for their own amusement, at our expense) or the "Missionaries" (a morality play, to teach us a lesson, implant or nurture an idea or value, to expand our consciousness, to usher mankind on to the next evolutionary step.) Perhaps this also ties in with the "Mimics" -- to make us believe one thing is happening, to conceal a different, covert activity.

  TULPAS

  They are living, temporal thought-forms with independent existence and will, created by human minds. Possible "causes": all flow from one "mad dreamer" -- a super-genius who generates UFO events either consciously (daydreams) or subconsciously (nightmares); or perhaps permanent thought-forms created by the collective unconscious mind of all science fiction authors and readers, the unintentional result of tens of thousands of individuals intensely concentrating on the idea of alien visitations over a number of decades. The later would explain why SF pulp cover art from the 1920s, 30s, and 40s depicts so vividly "flying saucer" types subsequently reported in the modern UFO era that began in 1946-47.

  INVADERS

  Let's not overlook the obvious: long term military reconnaissance preparatory to a full scale attack, invasion of the planet. Any single role or a number of roles could be used as camouflage for military activity. The broad-based, full spectrum multiplicity of apparent origins, purposes and natures could be a vastly complex technological smokescreen to keep us from realizing their true purpose: take-over and colonization. Mankind could be wiped out, enslaved or assimilated by a superior race. Opportunism. Purpose may be other than strictly military: could be mining, farming, perhaps even commerce with human special interest groups.

  CONTROL MECHANISM

  Rather than individuation (distinct alien individuals acting as occupant crews manning separate ships, involved in discreet landing events, etc.), phenomenon is a product/manifestation of a single alien intelligence. Intelligent matter/energy manifesting as "saucers with crews," in actuality mere parts of a whole living alien organism or presence. Set up as a control system and acting as a Meta-Missionary/Warden/Whatever-It-Is. Holographic projections, temporary physical constructs beamed at humans by satellite, underground computer, or from a distance source (interstellar, intergalactic, interdimensional), would fit into this scenario. Projections could also be camouflage for other activity, i.e.: show us Missionary Space Brothers from Venus while carrying out mundane activities such as mining the oceans or polar regions. A front of noble "Scientists" researching our biosphere could cover for the establishment of military strongholds in the jungles of South America.

  REALITY WARP

  Alternate realities, parallel worlds, etc. The "solution" to the UFO mystery may change constantly as our reality changes. A variable solution which is always shifting on us, so that the "secret" answers of the 1950s or 60s or 70s no longer mean anything. The true secret which the government, MIB and/or some other agency has been covering up all these years may be that our reality is unstable, subjective, or a mere illusion, generated by our collective (or even individual) consciousness. The consensus reality may be a fraud. And, to carry it a bit further, so-called objective reality (the absolute ground of being) may have been "damaged" by the government itself, during Unified Field Theory experiments conducted in the early 1940s as part of the war effort (see: The Philadelphia Experiment: Project Invisibility by William L. Moore and Charles Berlitz, 1979.) The U.S. government investigated three related phenomena in 1943: invisibility, anti-gravity (magnetic levitation) and atomic energy. They may have succeeded in all three. The only one they told us about was the one they couldn't conceal -- the atomic bomb. Indications are that invisibility and teleportation were achieved, along with unexpected, highly undesirable side-effects that suggest interdimensional barriers had been crossed. Damages to our reality may have opened "windows"; UFOs and other paranormal events increased dramatically as a result. There are hints that the U.S. government knew about and covered up the paranormal nature of UFO events during the early 1940s.

  Concealing this unnerving truth (that there is no single, constant reality and that we are subject to unpreventable incursions from other realities) from the public may have been an act of kindness performed for our own good; how many average citizens could handle such news, and remain sane, productive, docile members of society? One in a thousand? If this (or something like it) is the case, we can expect further obfuscation and denial from the authorities, and no answers will be forthcoming. Incidentally, a great deal of material was deleted from the official documents on UFOs obtained by private UFO investigators in recent years under the Freedom of Information Act. Perhaps because the withheld (or heavily censored) material referenced 1) the true scope of the problem, 2) the military's impotence in dealing with the problem, 3) our vulnerability to on-going "raids" from the unknown, and 4) the fact that assumptions about reality which are commonly held by most members of our culture are totally false.

  Making such information public would have the effect of undermining the philosophic, religious, moral, scientific and historical foundations of all modern societies, if it was believed by the public. Otherwise, if not believed, it would destroy all credibility of the source of the information (the government/military.) Either way, the knowledge would be most destructive and disruptive. Our entire civilization might be reduced to anarchy in the face of cosmic chaos.

  MULTIPLICITY OF SOLUTIONS

  No single model has been proposed (here or elsewhere) which fits all the evidence. This leads me to suspect that either 1) the solution to the UFO mystery (i.e., the source/purpose/nature of UFO) is so bizarre, so alien, that no one has yet conceptualized it -- and maybe it is beyond human understanding -- or, 2) there is no single solution, and in that case, only a combination of models could fit all of the data and represent accurately what is really happening. In other words, there may be many distinct types of phenomena occurring, some of which may include various different kinds of alien entities with different origins who are here for quit
e different reasons. These groups of aliens may interact not only with humans, but among each other. The possibility exists that there are friendly (toward humans) aliens and hostile aliens, and that they are at war with each other. Furthermore, some UFO entities may not have a full understanding of the entire scope of the phenomenon themselves. They may be cognizant of certain types of UFO events themselves and oblivious to other aspects of the phenomenon.

  The variables are innumerable: any number of similar and/or related phenomena, potentially including any number of various alien entities from any number of sources, with any number of purposes, not to mention the sources and purposes we have not yet begun to imagine (or may never even begin to suspect.) Plus the complicating factor of possible governmental involvement, complicity, secrecy and cover-ups, private hoaxes and delusions, red herrings .... Taken as a whole, there are almost an infinite number of "possible" solutions, although granted, not many of them are all that probable, due to their inherently fantastic nature.
